Appleton Mill Turbine House
As part of the revitalization of the historic Appleton Mills parcel, Conner Design has been contracted to breathe new life in to an old relic, long familiar to the community and once the power plant for the mill it supported; creating public spaces to engage the burgeoning population. The newly conceived Turbine House Coffee Shop & Performing Arts Center is planned to occupy the existing utility structure which adjoins the Mill Building on the first floor, facing Middlesex Street. The venue’s name pays homage to the mechanical equipment contained within that was once the life line of the old mill. The interior spaces of the structure house a small theater to showcase performances by local artists as well as a café which flows around the old turbine, celebrating the heritage of the city while serving purpose as an inspiration towards the future. The space outside the building will function as an open air exhibition area and provide a backdrop for public works installations. The Turbine House will now support the community as a space for gathering and celebrating the arts as it once drove the Mill, all the while respecting the history contained within its brick walls.
